... She felt that most new scientific findings were taking away from the beauty of nature. Findings such as the induction of the railway and farming machines took away the essence of nature and turned it into a machine ran environment. Through the novel "Frankenstein" she made many of her feelings known. "Frankenstein" was a novel about a man creating a monster through science. Shelly felt this was bad as men don't mould men, women make men, women bear children, Frankenstein is unnatural because he took on the woman's role. What you get when men give birth is an icky and yucky, scary, mean, nasty monster. "Flash of lightning illuminated the object and discovered its shape plainly to me; its gigantic stature, and the deformity of its aspect, more hideous than belongs to humanity, instantly informed me that it was the wretch, the filthy demon to whom had given life." (Shelly 60). Shelly also felt that science has a long-term effect as well when she wrote "I am alone and miserable: man will not associate with me; but one as deformed and horrible as myself would not deny herself to me. My companion must be of the same species and have the same defects. This being you must create."(Shelly 129) It is clear that Shelly didn't favor the effects of the Enlightenment and that she felt the human body and spirit was greater than reason but Darwin and Freud welcomed the devolvement of reason and science that the Enlightenment brought. Sigmund Freud was a complex man that was a genius in his field. Freud's studies, theories and techniques have had more impact on the world of psychology than any other psychologist in the 19th century and is said by some to be the founding father of psychology. ...
